Brave dog rescued after being shot in head and beaten with sticks on Turkish beach
But this spaniel-retriever cross is a born survivor - and he has been rescued from a life of abuse to become a genuine Turkish Delight.
He has overcome being shot in the head which left him unable to eat and having sticks and stones thrown at him on a foreign beach.
But now he is enjoying a new lease of life in Britain.
He was found last year with a gunshot wound in the Turkish resort of Kusadasi by Dutch tourists who arranged for him to get veterinary care.
But he was then released to return to life as a stray on the beach where locals took to throwing sticks and stones at him.
He got put in a local dog pound where he was found lying next to dead and dying dogs.
British holidaymaker Eileen Jones stepped in and arranged for medical care through local welfare group Kusadasi Paws and Claws.
The child and family worker for the Welsh charity Valleys Kids also started raising the £2,000 to bring him to the sanctuary where she works as a volunteer - Friends of the Animals RCT's Wonky Towers in the Rhondda Valley.
She said: "He arrived around Christmas and was in a terrible state.
"His eye socket was open and weeping from an E.coli infection.
"Shards of bone were embedded in his skull and he could not open his mouth.
"He could only eat and drink by sucking up food and water.
"He would never have survived without immediate help."
Jack was operated on at Bristol University's Langford Veterinary Services and is recovering well with foster owner Margaret Mallett near Pershore in Worcestershire.
Margaret, 62, and a retired IT worker, said: "He is an amazing little dog.
"Come what may his tail is wagging and his attitude to life is: 'I'll make the best of it. Here I come.'
"He is also a clever dog who worked out how to survive by sucking up food and water, and he loves home comforts, especially lying by a dog fire."
When he is fully recovered Margaret will help pick an owner who can give him the love he needs - and was for so long was denied.
Eileen, 61, said: "Jack is our Turkish Delight.
"He's aged about three and is an amazingly friendly, trusting dog.
"He adores people.
"He is so outgoing.
"When you think of all the cruelty he has suffered it is incredible.
"But he just seems to want to be everyone's friend.
"I know he is just one dog among so many strays but you can only save them one at a time.
"He was also in the right place at the right time.
"Humans did this to him so it seems only right that humans are putting things right."
