Man with carotene allergy: One sniff of a carrot could kill him
Andy Walters, 33, is allergic to carotene, the chemical that gives carrots and other vegetables their orange colour.
It is used in many soft drinks, sweets, mustard and other foods.
And his allergy has worsened to such a degree that now even smelling the chemical can result in anaphylactic shock.
Anaphylaxis can cause rashes, swollen eyes, fainting, nausea, pain and swelling in the mouth and throat causing the airway to close.
If left untreated this can lead to death by asphyxiation.
Andy, a father of two from Wrexham, said yesterday: “I’d like people to take allergies more seriously.”
The Food Standards Agency does not count carotene in its top allergens so food manufacturers do not need to warn consumers of its presence.
