Massive killer newt was top predator and terrorised dinosaurs during Jurassic period
The amphibian, with hundreds of teeth in a flat head like a toilet seat, took the place of crocodiles as a top predator over 200 million years ago.
Fossil remains of Metoposaurus algarvensis, were found at the site of an ancient lake in south Portugual.
Edinburgh University’s Dr Steve Brusatte led a study published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.
He said: “This new amphibian looks like something out of a bad monster movie.
"It was as long as a small car and had hundreds of sharp teeth in its big flat head, which kind of looks like a toilet seat.”
Co-author Dr Richard Butler, from the University of Birmingham, said: “These giant predators would have made lakes and rivers pretty scary places to be.”
The salamander-like amphibians were wiped out in a mass extinction 201 million years ago.
